South Dakota Pheasant Hunting

The hunt is where Ringnecks greatly outshines the competition! To begin with, we don’t release any birds. We hunt 100% wild birds, and we are located in the densest pheasant population in the country, if not the world. Last year's pheasant counts by the South Dakota Game, Fish & Parks estimated our area at 24 pheasants per mile which is almost double that of the next highest and 8 times the State's average (see the pheasant population report).

Further, we have well over 15,000 acres spread throughout Lyman County. This spread means that we don’t have all our eggs in one basket. Sometimes pheasant populations are drastically different within a county due to drought, flood and/or hailstorms. If north Lyman County gets hit hard with a hailstorm, we have many other fields throughout the rest of the county that probably wouldn’t have been affected.

Also, the large acreage allows groups to hunt different terrains and habitats every day. Each year we put in over 300 acres of food plots, which consist of milo, cane, corn and millet. In addition and when needed, we spread additional grain. We have more than 2,500 acres of CRP, which we plant the maximum allowable acres of food plots into them. Many of our CRP fields also have numerous tree strips and water in them. Also, we have 6-10 draws with thick natural vegetation, lined with food strips, and around a dozen sloughs with dams and cattails. Next year, we’re planning on creating a new type of pheasant hunting habitat which may prove for more easy and plentiful hunting.

“I have hunted for five years in South Dakota and the best true hunting experience for pheasants was with Ringnecks Hunting Lodge because there is so much variable terrain, not just crop rows. The variety makes it so much fun. The birds are wily and wild, sneaking around you if they can get away with it. Also, the deer population makes it fun when a deer flushes instead of a pheasant. I am coming back this fall.”

At Ringnecks we provide guides and dogs to assist your group with safety, hunting strategies, flushing and retrieval of your birds. Our guides know a lot about what to expect for bird numbers, where they’re likely to be concentrated and how they’re likely to flush. They are out there to assist you, not to boss you around.

Safety Information

At Ringnecks Hunting & Lodging, safety comes first!  Before hunting, a safety talk and check is conducted to foster a safe hunt and to ensure that everyone is aware of the laws and regulations that apply to South Dakota pheasant hunting.

Ringnecks reserves the right to terminate any hunt in which the rules, regulations, and/or safety are blatantly disregarded.

Dogs

Ringnecks has trained dogs available for your hunt.  Hunters are also welcome to bring their own dogs, provided vaccinations are current and the dog is well-behaved. We have kennels available outside the lodge for your use. Dogs are not allowed inside the lodge. We do recommend conditioning your dog beginning months prior to a hunt.

License Information

Hunters will be required to purchase a South Dakota hunting license.  Hunting licenses and handbooks of South Dakota hunting laws and regulations are available from S.D. Game Fish and Parks online at:
